Pre-cast Fireplaces

Many California homes built from the mid-1960s to early 1990s feature a distinct type of chimney manufactured by Rampart General. These systems were pre-cast in Santa Ana using a special blend of calcium aluminate cement and lightweight aggregate.

Identifying Your Rampart General Chimney:
You can often identify them by their off-white or tan, brick-like appearance—this is the natural color of the cement, not paint. They are typically located on an exterior wall, projecting out from the house, and are notably narrow above the “shoulders.” You might also see what looks like an antenna; this is often a structural support added to stabilize the chimney.

Why Specialized Expertise is Critical:
Rampart General is no longer in business, so homeowners have no recourse with the manufacturer. These aging chimneys often develop cracks and other issues that require specific knowledge to repair correctly.

There are three major problems with these systems:

Due to their age and construction, Rampart General chimneys often develop specific, serious flaws that require immediate attention from a specialist. The most critical defects we find include:

1. Cracked Firebox Insulation (Breast Plate): Cracks in the insulation directly above the fireplace opening pose a major fire hazard, as they can allow extreme heat to transfer to combustible home framing.

2. Major Structural Cracks: Look for long, deep vertical cracks along the chimney shaft. These often form where internal steel rebar is rusting and expanding. If left unaddressed, these cracks can progress to the point where a full, costly chimney rebuild becomes the only option.

3. A Damaged or Deteriorated Flue Liner: A compromised clay flue liner cannot safely contain heat and toxic combustion gases, creating a significant fire and carbon monoxide risk.

Don’t wait for hairline cracks to become catastrophic. Early intervention by our team can save your chimney and protect your property’s value. Contact us for a definitive inspection.
